12 Realms Expands to Bedtime Stories

MAGE Company Begins Development of Bedtime Story Kickstarter

Hello everyone! I have yet to post my review of 12 Realms, life gets busy! And yet, MAGE Company has done some great work and continues to give the people what they want, and it appears that is more and more 12 Realms! While the Kickstarter page to the latest expansion won't be live until April, you can go ahead and check it out now: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/magecompany/195747538?token=b51519b0.

They will be updating the page until it is live, so this way you can keep up with the latest and be ready to pledge as soon as its live - or you can start getting your questions answered right away. You can also suggest things that you would like to see when it goes live.

Also, Happy March everyone! I still can't believe that it is already March. This month is full of fun geeky holidays like the Ides of March and Pi Day - it also has a few family birthdays as well. Busy times. I hope you are all well. Until next time, happy gaming!

Russell Javert and Harrison Graff

Les Mis and Ender's Game

Okay everyone, I am so excited for these two movies! The clip below shows us a little insight on Russell Crowe's vocal talent and the picture is the first glimpse of the Ender's Game movie (set to come out November 1, 2013). We will have to see if the movie can compete with the second Hunger Games movie also scheduled for release that month. With Ben Kingsley and Harrison Ford, I have some pretty high hopes for the movie, and Asa Butterfield I think will be a great Ender. Anyway, we have a long time before that movie comes out, so let's focus back on Les Mis. Merry Christmas! Les Mis is out on the 25th of December and is going to be incredible. Its star power is unbelievable; Amanda Seyfried, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, and Helena Bonham Carter. I am currently reading the abridged version of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables (abridged, so that I can finish it before the movie comes out). I have seen the show done live, and have listened to special Broadway anniversary editions on T.V. and in French class. The story is amazing, and the songs are transcendent. Be excited and that is How Lou Sees It!

Just wanted to give you all an update on what I am reading lately. I just started reading Aaron Starmer's "The Only Ones" and I can tell you that I am hooked. Batman Blooms

The Dark Knight Rises

An amazing movie to end an amazing trilogy. The best batman movies of all time and the best superhero trilogy ever made. The Dark Knight Rises does not disappoint. It is true that Heath Ledger's role as The Joker couldn't be topped by Bane or Catwoman, but Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway really hold their own in the film. I was actually very pleased with Anne as Catwoman even though I was worried. That gives me hope for the new Superman movie Man of Steel as well, because even though there are big names, I am a bit worried to see how Amy Adams does as Lois Lane. Anyway, not totally off topic, there was of course the Man of Steel teaser trailer in front of The Dark Knight Rises. The trailer was a bit confusing to everyone I think, but I still think that this new Superman movie has great hope.

Knowing a bit about Bane from my comic book reading and Batman novel reading, I was pretty pleased with how the movie was done. Joseph Gordon-Levitt also does a great job as a supporting cop/detective role. The movies are just so well done, and this last movie ties all the movies nicely together. Very happy with it.

Garden Turned Flowers

Well, for those who knew of my pot garden last year (a garden grown in pots...not a literal pot garden), this year I decided to just plant flowers. I am very happy with that decision. My Dahlia plant is especially doing well, and it is by far my favorite. Anyway, check it out! The pictures turned out great too.

Remember to take time to smell the Dahlias and only 6 more days until the beginning of AYPAD (A Yoga Pose A Day) and that is How Lou Sees It.

A Game A Day In Review

A Game A Day

70 straight days of playing a different board game each night and writing a review. From Day 1 I wasn't really sure how many days that this project would last; I was hoping that I could make it past 40 days. Thanks to the support of friends and family letting me borrow some of their games, the support of Rio Grande Games, Minion Games, and MindWare for their game donations, and especially the amazing support from The Wife who put up with me blogging every night and playing a game when the day didn't even have time for it. A big SHOUT OUT and THANK YOU!

I am still amazed that I made it this long. And yet, there are many more games out there to be played. I will definitely continue to review the games that I own and have played for you all. You will be able to find a list of all of my game reviews which I will organize alphabetically. I love board games. Sometimes I will just find myself reading reviews and rules to board games just for fun. This has really been a really fun project and I have enjoyed it immensely and I hope that you have as well.

If you didn't notice, most of my reviews were 3 fingers up (equivalent to an 8 out of 10 or better. This is because most of the games I played are games that I actually own...and why would I buy a game that I don't love? So, there are a lot of 4 fingers up (or 9/10) which are all amazing games, but the top games that all received a thumbs up (10/10) are listed below (Chess and Scrabble are not included in this list just because they are so well known already, but they also received the full 10/10 thumbs up):
Top 10 (listed alphabetically)
Now on to the Scoreboard results. The Wife and I were pretty much neck and neck throughout the project although The Wife had a winning streak of like 13 games in a row I believe. In the end, I came out on top (even with my losing record, I had the most victories):
                            W-L-T
Lou                      32-35-3
The Wife              28-39-3
Nicole                  3-2-0
Nathan                 2-4-0
T.B.I.L.                1-0-0
Sauron                 1-0-0
F. I.                      1-0-0
Jackie                   0-1-0
Spencer                0-1-0
Bryan                   0-2-0

I did not get to play all of the games that I would have liked to, but that is one of the great joys of board games. There are so many fun games out there that all offer something a little bit different. Some of the games that I did not get a chance to play or review include (consider it my watch/wish list in no particular order; I have played a lot of these games, but I do not own or have easy access to them):

Tsuro, The Resistance, Black Friday, Friday, Crows, Flash Point Fire Rescue, Ricochet Robots, Fearsome Floors, 7 Wonders, 221 B Baker Street, Nuns on the Run, Pandemic, Ticket to Ride Europe, Alhambra, Le Havre, Blokus, and the list goes on and on.

Thank you again for supporting this project by checking out my blog. I may be taking a break from the Game Reviews for a while, but don't fret everyone. I have a new project on the horizon. Everyone prepare for (drum roll please) .... A Yoga Pose A Day. Now, it may be a little while before I start this project. I have to start some research and find a killer Yoga outfit, but I plan on at least attempting a different Yoga Pose every day and posting a picture to prove it! If only they had a Yoga themed board game. Get excited folks and that is How Lou Sees It!

Fill or Bust a Pole

Day 24 - Fill or Bust

Farkel with a little twist of the cards. This is a great little game for those who enjoy rolling dice and pressing your luck. A game for 2 to 10 players (although you may want to split up the deck and have an extra set of dice going for a lot of players or else you will be waiting on everyone else and the game will take forever), the game plays best I think with 2 to 4 players. You can set the end of the game to any scoring value you want, so the game can be as long or short as you would like.

For those unfamiliar with the game Farkel, it is a dice game where you roll 6 dice looking to score as many points as possible. You can keep rolling as long as you keep rolling "pointers" (or dice that give you points). You score points for the following: a 1 is worth 100, a 5 is worth 50, a straight rolled on the first roll with 6 dice scores you 1500, 3 1s are worth 1000, and 3 dice of 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 6s are respectively worth 100 times that number. You have to roll the multiples in the same roll (you can't store 2 3s hoping for a 3rd 3 etc.). So, that is the base of the game. Rolling dice trying to obtain points. Simple and fun.

Fill or Bust adds a bit of an extra element with the deck of cards that come with the dice. At the beginning of one's turn, the top card of the draw pile is flipped over. Each card has a different affect. There is a "No Dice" card where the player looses any points rolled so far his/her current turn or if at the beginning of the turn, their turn is skipped. Most of the cards offer a bonus for a "Fill." A Fill is when a player scores points using all 6 dice. If the player scores a Fill, then they get the bonus points from the card as well. Some cards make you continue to roll the dice for certain bonuses, and the Vengeance 2500 will take 2500 points from the leader if you score a Fill. A "Bust" is when a player rolls the dice and it does not produce any pointers. This ends the players turn, and will result in loosing all their points they rolled during this current turn (unless they flipped over the Must Bust card).

Anyway, that is the game in a nutshell. A great little game that you can fit in your pocket and play anywhere (waiting in a line at a theme park, waiting for a movie to start or your food to arrive, waiting for something in the airport or on the plane, in a car, on a boat...you get the idea.). Played this game tonight with The Wife and The Brother In Law (T.B.I.L.) (who was just introduced to the game tonight) and The Brother In Law pulled out a win creating a tie with Sauron and placing me now 8 games away from gaining a winning record.

Sign Holders Out in Full Force

Just a little realization that happened to me today. You know the people on corners or on the side of the streets that are holding signs for business advertising? I'm sure you have noticed them; the statue of liberty people trying to get you to come to them for tax services, the Little Caesar's Pizza guy promoting Hot N' Ready for 5 Bucks, the girl enthusiastically holding a sign stating that their is a special for haircuts at Great Clips, the mechanic outside Jiffy Lube saying that they currently have No Wait, or the kid who has practiced flipping the sign around like only a ninja could stating that their are some town homes for sale. You have to admit, some of these people do a great job getting your attention. I like the ones who are dancing like crazy people myself. But wait! Have these people always been on the streets doing this sort of thing? I don't have a very good memory, so help me out people. 10 years ago, where their people dressed up like Lady Liberty dancing The Robot? Were there sign holders back then? I don't remember any. If I could go back in time, I would go back 10 years to answer this question. Maybe the sign holders have just become more efficient at getting my attention. Maybe the economy has forced these people into jobs where they are providing the same support to a sign that a pole does just as well? There is a Pearls Before Swine comic that showed Pig getting a job where he was holding a sign. He says to Rat, "My Mamma Raised a Pole." Where did this society of sign holders come from? Would it be offensive to call these people poles? I have so many questions regarding this situation. How many years out are we from having Sign Holder classes taught at the local community college?

Sign Holder Interview:
Jerry Pole - "OK Mr......Brewster. I appreciate your interest in being a Sign Holder for us, but we have a lot of applicants for this position. It is among the top most desired sign holding positions around. Tell me, what sets you apart?"
Mr. Brewster - "Well, I have a Bachelor's in Sign Holding and I'm really skinny. I have an emphasis in Long Arrow type signs, so that could come in handy..."

Can we gauge the economy by how many sign holders we see on the streets or is this (dare I say it) career emerging because people love the idea of being similar to a pole or maybe they like the attention? I just don't want to see my Stop sign dancing around on the next corner I pull up to and that is How Lou Sees It.

Learned about this group on a CNN story actually. They are pretty amazing. You should also check out Zuckerberg: The Musical (warning: there is a bleeped out 2 seconds) and any of their other videos (the whistler guy is amazing).

Day 15 - Ticket to Ride
Designed by Alan R. Moon

Chuga chuga chuga, choo chooooo! Here comes the trains. A game to make Thomas himself smile with delight. A game for 2-5 train builders, this game takes about an hour to play. There are multiple maps or versions of this game, but this review is specifically for the US version. The object of the game is to end the game with the most victory points. You obtain points by achieving your certain destination ticket cards (example: Toronto to Miami). The longer the route, the more points its worth. If you have a ticket card and are unable to build a train line that connects the cities, you get minus the amount of points on the ticket. Players draw certain colored train cards (there are wilds as well) to build on certain routes. A player may also draw more ticket cards throughout the game (drawing 3, keeping at least 1). Very good family game. Kids around 7 or 8 can play easily although they may miss out on some strategy. Nicole came out victorious tonight. Definitely worth playing and it couldn't hurt to own a copy (pick your version - there is Europe, Germany, etc) and that is How Lou Sees It.

Olympic Mistborn Animals Avenge Homer Simpson

Mistborn: The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1)Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the first Sanderson novel that I have picked up. I decided to check it out from the library after hearing multiple people say how they enjoyed them. I have to say that I am very impressed, and you can count on me reading Sanderson's other books - with the rest of the Mistborn series on the top of my list. Sanderson does everything well with this book. He creates such an amazingly descriptive world and has some great character development. Some moments were predictable, but not necessarily in a bad way. The story is fantastic and the intriguing abilities of the Mistborn and other Allomancers are very cool. The book is pretty violent (just a heads up) with many brutal killings, but the book is clean of bad language and sexual descriptions. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to read a good fantasy novel. Fantastic. (View all my 'goodreads' reviews)

The Avengers

I saw The Avengers this last weekend (with about a half million others probably) and I really enjoyed it (surprise surprise from the man who still goes and buys a comic book every once and a while). With the success of comic book hero movies over the past decade, Marvel used the oldest trick in the book to make this movie the huge success it is - combine many great things into one great thing. Thor, Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, and throw in Hawkeye and Black Widow and you have an amazing line up of comic book heroes (The Avengers) and some great actors (and actresses - including Cobie Smulders who plays some prominent agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.).

The Avengers is a non-stop action type flick with some witty one-liners, in other words, a comic book brought to life on the big screen. The story line could be simplified to the following: the world is in danger from an evil villain and these super heroes have to band together to save the world. You don't really need to see the other movies before seeing this film, but I would highly recommend doing so (not just because they are great movies, but it will help you get some of the jokes throughout this film). For story line purposes, the movie Thor would be the most important in understanding the movie a bit more because the evil villain in this film is Loki (Thor's brother). If you were not a fan of Thor, I don't think you will enjoy this movie either (maybe you will a bit more than Thor, but since the story line is heavily based off of Thor...). The fact is, I love comic books and I love the movies that Marvel has done. This is definitely a winner in my book, and I'm not surprised that Disney confirmed The Avengers 2 is already in the works. There is also Iron Man 3 to look forward to next year and other sequels coming out like Thor 2 and Captain America 2. Stay 'till the credits are done to get a couple more quick clips. It looks like Thanos will be the next villain The Avengers will have to face (or he may end up in some of the other sequel movies before then). Thumbs up for The Avengers.

Lou Compared to Homer Simpson

I was recently compared to Homer Simpson and I was very flattered (Mmmmm....Fat). Other than the fact that we have a similar work environment, I'm overweight, and I'm on my way to baldness... Homer was once a food critic who gave reviews like me. Let me explain. Homer Simpson loves food, but not only that...he loves everything he eats. I guess you could say we are similar in this regard as well. Not only do I love food, but I love board games. Now, contrary to popular belief I bet there are some board games out there that I may not like so much - I just haven't played them yet. I own games that I really enjoy, and hence the good reviews (and if we learned anything from that Simpson's episode, bad reviews can bring some unwanted attention). I may start including more reviews from The Wife along with mine to give readers a different perspective now and again.

Day 13 - Animal Olympics
Designed by Heinz Meister
Illustrated by Uwe Schildmeier

With the London Summer Olympic Games starting July 27th, tonight The Wife and I played Animal Olympics. 2-4 players, ages 7 and up, and taking 5-10 minutes to play, this is a great little game for teaching children to think critically and about ordering with numbers. Each player is dealt eight cards, face down in front of them in a line. The goal of the game is to get the cards in order from the lowest on the left to the highest on the right. This is accomplished by drawing a card either from the discard pile or the draw pile and replacing one of the face down cards in front of you. The first player to successfully have 8 cards face up in the proper order wins the whole enchilada. The Wife and I played best of three. I won the gold medal. The game is a little too simple for my liking but is a great teaching tool for youngsters. I thoroughly enjoy the illustrations. The hippo in 31st place is my favorite and that is How Lou Sees It.
